Brennus

It was the kind of night where rain and gloom would have been apropos, but when they reached the old Clan Mordred lands, the sky was clear and there were glittering stars as far as the eye could see. If they'd been at Winterbourne Manor, he and Troyes would have gone for a run through the woods, possibly with Midnight tagging along in his raven form. After hours of running, they'd return to the manor exhilarated, often with Neirin on the back lawn waiting for them. Midnight would vanish into the house where Devlin waited. Neirin would grumble about grass and dirt, but he always surrendered to them wanting to stay outside.

One of many things he'd vowed not to think about, but the damnable thoughts slipped in whenever he let his guard down.

"The last time we approached a castle, we got a whole lot of nothing for our troubles," Barra said. "I would not have called that luck at the time, but we should be so lucky this time."

Hasna snorted but did not argue. "I will do my best to keep him occupied while you search for the Holy Pendragon."

"Are you certain you'll be able to escape? I cannot see him letting you go."

"We do not have much choice but to let me try, so the question is moot."

That was a no if ever Barra had heard one, and he'd heard quite a few such no's from Devlin and Neirin. Oh, how he wished for Midnight right then. He could be reckless when his blood was up, but most of the time he was cool and practical to Devlin's stormier nature.

On second thought, given Devlin's condition and that they were going to face the man who'd put him in that condition, it was better that Midnight wasn't there.

Barra smiled crookedly at Hasna. "I suppose we'd best be getting on with it, then." They dismounted and he quickly shifted, woofing softly in thanks as she secured the pouch he would need later to carry the baby while still a wolf. Once the horses were secured behind an old, crumbling cottage, they headed off further into the territory bound for the castle not too far off in the distance, just visible by the light of the full moon.

This was going to end in disaster, but Hasna was right: what choice did they have? They couldn't return to Pendragon even if he wanted to—it was too far away, they'd never get past the protections, and it was likely Hasna, at least, would be killed on sight.

And there was no time to call in favors from those who owed Devlin, nobody he trusted enough to bring them into the matter anyway. Or, as in the case of the demon lord, it was a mess they were better off not getting involved in.

So it was just the two of them against a sorcerer who'd already come far too close to killing them—who had failed only because Barra had been able to call Avalon for help.
